Don’t just SPEND your marketing budget, INVEST it! Invite the right people into your business and keep inviting them…Top Of Mind Awareness is key for consistent business growth.

I hear many questions about advertising from local business owners…among the most asked is, I don’t know if my budget is large enough or how to get started?
I always say it’s not rocket science…just know who your target demo is and reach out to them, invite them into your business. The demographic you want to reach or should be reaching is usually the age, gender, etc. of the person that spends the most on the items/services that brings you the greatest return.
Once you figure out who those people are, start talking to them, be it radio, TV, print, internet, outdoor billboard, what ever the medium you choose, make sure you’re consistent. Don’t just advertise for a week or a month…NEVER spend all of your budget in one full splurge. Stretch it out and be consistent…did I mention consistency is key?
It’s better to build up your frequency factor over a long period of time, reaching those consumers that are in the market for your products or services NOW and those that WILL BE in the future. If you have a call to action product or service, there is a way to make that work as well while increasing your business consistently.
If you have a large budget, by all means go for it! Invest, Invest, Invest! But for those of you who don’t have that LARGE budget to compete with national business, be smart and invest your ad dollars wisely. Top of Mind Awareness (TOMA) is key to business growth and that is achieved by being consistent.
When it’s done right, it is an investment, not an expenditure. After all, if you put your hard earned money into something that makes you more money than what you put in, isn’t that an investment? The answer is yes…ding ding ding, what do we have for them Johhhhn-nneeee!

Being a “Resource” not a “Salesman” on Social Media Networking Sites…

…Ok, so, I’ve said this many, many times yet still see businesses making the annoying errors of “selling” on SMN sites rather than simply being a resource. People like to buy from those they’re familiar with…not people that are constantly throwing prices and “selling” to them. I mean, come on! People get on Facebook and Twitter to communicate and it’s the one place they want to escape constantly being sold.

Earn the trust of your consumers by showing them you’re knowledgeable in your area of business and that you know your stuff. Become a resource by posting useful tidbits of information. Interact with your fans or followers by asking for their input…no one likes a know it all and believe me, WE ALL don’t know it ALL! You may even get some interesting input and ideas to help your business by getting feedback from friends, fans and followers. In some cases and every once in a while it’s good to throw prices…if you own a restaurant, for example, it’s okay to mention “a” special now and then, i.e. happy hours, etc. But if you’re launching a new place and you’re already throwing cheap prices, you’re devaluing your product before you’ve established your forte or specialty. Don’t devalue your product…especially if you have an amazing product to begin with. Have tastings and events to bring awareness and show your product worth.

Once you’ve hit it big and are established, then say “thank you” to your consumers for making your business a success by having specials. But just as fast as you can promote your business on social media networking sites, you can hurt it if you are NOT promoting it positively and with confidence. Remember, to bring in the kind of consumer into your establishment that will take care of your employees and not mind paying regular prices on your products, you must believe in your products and services first. For these are the type of consumers that will “grow” your business, not trash it. We’ve posted several blogs on “Selling on SMN Sites in a Socializing Kind of Way”…check out our blogs on our website, Facebook Page, Twitter, Bebo, Blogger, FriendFeed, Friendster, LinkedIn and MySpace, Plurk…all WordSpreadMedia.

What’s a good time to post status updates on social media networking sites?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

…Not past 11pm and not all bunched up. Really! The way social media networking is designed to work:
A. to help brand intrusively without “selling”
B. don’t post a bunch of posts all at once…spread it out!
C. you’ll reach a much larger audience during “peek” SMN times…usually, that’s not after 11pm-12am.ami-blog-pic-4-10-093

ami-blog-pic-4-10-092Ok, so, back in the day, a simple ad on TV or radio was sufficient to bring customer awareness on your business. But then again, so was simple word of mouth advertising. Today, there is so much competition in EVERY industry, that thinking outside the box to reach and brand new customers is a MUST! Ten years ago there were articles, within the advertising industry, coming out supporting facts on advertising and reaching GenX & GenY demographics. They educated us on the importance of reaching these now so coveted generations though Entertainment, Sports, Music, etc.

For this I say keep on keeping on! There is another “genre” of attracting and retaining brand loyalty. We know Nascar fans are DIE HARD and they support those advertisers and sponsors that support their addictive sport. Well, Sprint Car racing fans are just as loyal and die hard as Nascar Fans.

While small business owners can’t all afford to do this type of sponsorship on a national level, they can on a regional level. Google “sprint car race series” in your local town and see who the regional owners are, then contact them and tell them you want to look at sponsorship opportunities. In a down economy, it’s a sport that still brings thousands to the race tracks for that one night a week of bliss and excitement. Yes, even wives who once fought for the time their husbands spent at the track now join their hubbies. Thanks to Danica Patrick, the face of race fans has forever been changed be it Nascar, Sprint, or Indie. Get your business to grow…get the attention of those future consumers! Grab, brand, and retain.

Make it Count…

…if you’re on a tight budget, or even if you’re NOT. Get to the point when marketing your business. Reaching the demographics that will “grow” your business isn’t difficult, but speaking to them in the manner in which they preferred to be pitched is another. GenX and GenY peeps don’t like loooooong, draggy blah blah blahs. They want YOU, the advertiser to get to the point. If you’re doing TV or Radio, a quick :15 to :30 invite is all you need. If you’re doing print or social media networking (hopefully you’re definitely doing the latter). You can give a quick snippet as to why you’re better than your competitor, without bashing your competition. Mainly, just tell them who you are, why they should come to you and your website, period.

RT Marketing on Social Media Networks…hurting your business or helping?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

If you’re adding to the top of mind awareness and branding of your business through social media networking, you may want to double check your approach. I’ve seen businesses that are “selling” or “pimping” their product on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and other sites and it makes me go . Seriously, if you consider the fact that we as consumers are constantly being sold, ’round the clock, so what makes you think we want to be sold when we’re trying to socialize albeit online and more specifically on our “social” sites? It’s one thing to take out an ad, that is expected, but if you are trying to gain loyalty and new customers through social media networking through your blogs or status updates, just consider the following tidbits of info:
DON’TS
1. Don’t sell, period
2. Don’t ADVERTISE specials or prices…that’s selling
3. Don’t offer sampling of any kind…again, that’s selling
3. Don’t knock any competition
DO’S
1. Do offer informative info that peeps can use
2. Do suggest, but indirectly
3. Do include a personal connection with friends, fans and followers
4. Do make it more personal by using YOUR personality

And if you’re Tweeting, I recommend using your own personal pic…even use a pic taken by a cell phone or something. People appreciate real and down to earthiness people they can relate to and more importantly, trust.
